What is Drupal?

Drupal is a content management system (CMS), or a software built for creating and organizing a high volume of website content. Content management systems are more powerful than website builders, with much more storage space and hands-on customization – so if you’re running a large website or want to design a really unique brand, then a CMS like Drupal is for you.

The tradeoff for all of that power is that a CMS requires more work on your end than a website builder would. One added responsibility that comes with a CMS is that you’ll have to host the website yourself – but if you choose a quality hosting provider that works well with Drupal, this doesn’t have to be a source of stress!

What Types of Hosting is Drupal For?

Drupal works well with both shared and VPS hosting.

  • Shared hosting is when you share a server and its resources with other websites. It’s the best option if you’re running a smaller website or looking to stay on a budget.
  • VPS hosting is technically still a shared server, but with more resources set aside specifically for your site. It’s the best option if you want to grow your website and expand its reach.

Of the six web hosts on this page, HostGator, GreenGeeks, and Hostinger offer shared Drupal hosting, while Bluehost and InMotion offer VPS Drupal hosting. A2 Hosting offers both.

Bluehost isn’t just our top-rated host for Drupal plans – it also ranks number one for web hosting in general. One-click Drupal installations are just tip of the iceberg when it comes to Bluehost’s ease of use, and it offers excellent value for money.

Bluehost Gallery

Bluehost uses the popular cPanel dashboard, which is known for its simple, easy-to-navigate layout. You can manage everything from storage space to email accounts in just a few clicks. Plus, Bluehost even starts you off with a checklist for setting up your website, so you won’t forget important steps like importing images or confirming your information.

Bluehost’s sign-up process is also really quick, and if you don’t already have a domain name for your site, you can purchase one alongside your Bluehost plan. This means you’ll be able to manage your hosting and domains right from your Bluehost dashboard.

Bluehost’s VPS plans start at $18.99 per month, which is smack in the middle of the typical range. And Bluehost actually finished second in the “value for money” category of our research, earning a 4.6/5 for the quality of its features.
Bluehost plans come with one-click Drupal installation for your convenience. Its VPS plans also offer:

  • 30 – 120 GB storage
  • 2 – 8 GB RAM
  • 1 – 3 TB bandwidth

Bluehost offers less storage space on its VPS plans than other competitors do. But it still scored an impressive 4.3/5 in our research for features, partly because of its free domain offer for the first year of your plan.

HostGator’s shared plans are great for Drupal hosting. If you’re transferring an existing Drupal website to HostGator, you can even have it moved over for free. For new sites, one-click Drupal installs are also available.

Similar to Bluehost, HostGator also uses the cPanel software for its dashboard, so you’ll have no trouble navigating around its clean interface. One-click Drupal installs also make your life easy.

Signing up for a HostGator account is pretty quick and simple – you’ll just want to keep an eye out for additional products, like SiteLock security and automatic backups, that get added to your cart at checkout. These tools are useful, but they’re not required, so be sure to remove them if you don’t want to pay for them!

HostGator’s shared plans start at $2.75 per month, which is very competitive as far as shared hosting plans go. HostGator only scored a 3.7/5 in the “value for money” category of our research, and its renewal prices aren’t the cheapest, but if you’re running a smaller Drupal website then you’ll be getting all of the features and support you need!

“Renewal prices” are the regular cost of a hosting plan after the first payment term, while “introductory prices” are the discounted rate that you’ll pay for the first term. Pretty much every hosting provider charges introductory and then renewal prices, but the jump from $2.49 to $10.95 on GreenGeeks’ cheapest plan is more than, say, the jump from $2.75 to $6.95 with HostGator – so its renewal prices still aren’t terrible!

At 99.99%, HostGator has the best uptime of any provider on this list. If reliability is your top priority, then this choice is easy! HostGator has also started offering a free domain for the first year of its shared plans, which is a major plus.

HostGator’s shared plans also come with unlimited bandwidth and storage space “within reason,” meaning the allowances are so high that your site is super unlikely to ever exceed them!

InMotion’s VPS plans impressed us because of their scalable features, and you don’t have to sacrifice ease of use in order to enjoy them – the InMotion support team has actually partnered with Drupal to provide a series of guides to setting up your site.

InMotion’s sign-up process can be a little overwhelming. Its VPS plans don’t have names, so you’ll have to differentiate between them based on the amount of RAM (memory for running scripts) that each one provides.

Once you’ve picked a plan, though, the rest of the process runs pretty smoothly. Plus, InMotion has actually partnered with Drupal to create a video series that helps users get their site up and running. The series is accessible on YouTube, and covers everything from backups to performance and security.

InMotion’s Drupal VPS plans start at $17.99 per month – a decent price, considering all the scalable features that come with it!
InMotion ranks number one on our list of the best VPS hosting providers, in large part because of powerful features like:

  • One-click Drupal installation
  • Unlimited bandwidth
  • Unlimited email
  • Free domain for the first year

A2 Hosting is known for its great security features and customer service. It’s a great choice if you want to grow your Drupal website over time, because you can easily move from a shared plan to a VPS plan.

A2 Hosting is a very convenient provider – for example, your account will come auto-installed with Drupal, so you can get started as quickly and easily as possible. Plus, A2 Hosting doesn’t add any additional costs to your cart at checkout – it’s pretty rare for a web host to make the sign-up process this simple and non-promotional.
A2 Hosting’s Drupal plans start at $2.99 per month on a shared server, which is a really competitive price. If you ever want to upgrade to one of its VPS plans, they start at $39.99 per month – not the cheapest, but definitely still excellent value. We think A2 Hosting’s dedicated, 24/7 support team and its emphasis on website speed justify the cost of its VPS plans.
A2 Hosting’s shared plans come with:

  • At least 100 GB storage space
  • Unlimited bandwidth
  • Proactive security measures

A2 Hosting’s security measures include virus scanning and server hardening to keep your website protected.

If you decide to upgrade to a VPS plan, you’ll get:

  • 150 – 450 GB storage space
  • 4 GB – 16 GB RAM
  • Up to five cPanel accounts

GreenGeeks offers one-click Drupal installations on all of its shared hosting plans. Its prices are on the more expensive side, but this provider offers a great range of features – including the most environmentally-friendly plans that we’ve seen.

GreenGeeks offers a free migration service for Drupal websites, as well as one-click Drupal installations.

The sign-up process with GreenGeeks is quick and painless, too – you won’t have any additional costs added to your cart at checkout.

GreenGeeks’ shared plans start at $2.49 per month. This is a really cheap introductory price – but it’s worth noting that GreenGeeks’ renewal prices are more expensive than those of competitors like Bluehost and HostGator.
GreenGeeks scored a perfect 5.0/5 in our research for features. All of its shared plans come with:

  • One-click Drupal installation
  • Unmetered bandwidth
  • Free domain name for the first year

Its cheapest shared plan comes with 50 GB storage space, while the rest of its shared plans offer unlimited storage space.

But what really sets GreenGeeks apart from the competition is its 300% renewable energy match, which means that this provider restores three times the amount of energy it consumes. It also means that your GreenGeeks website will be carbon-reducing.

Hostinger offers the lowest introductory prices of any host on this list, so it’s a great choice if you’re looking to save money on your Drupal hosting. That said, the tradeoff is that you won’t be getting as many features – or as much scalability – as you would with other, more expensive providers.

Hostinger has a team of Drupal experts on hand that you can reach out to if you need help getting set up, and it also offers one-click installs of the CMS.

Hostinger doesn’t use the popular cPanel dashboard – it uses its own custom dashboard instead. This means that if you want to switch to a more scalable host in the future, you’ll probably have to get comfortable with cPanel then – still, this is only a small drawback, since cPanel is super easy to get used to!

Hostinger’s shared plans start at $1.39 per month – a super-low introductory price. Even its renewal prices are incredibly cheap, starting at $2.99 per month (that’s closer to the introductory prices of most providers!).

Still, Hostinger is definitely a provider where you get what you pay for. Hostinger only scored a 3.8/5 in the “value for money” category of our research, because it doesn’t offer the same amount of features or scalability as providers like Bluehost and HostGator.

Hostinger’s cheapest shared plan comes with:

  • 30 GB storage space
  • 100 GB bandwidth
  • One email account

Its more expensive shared plans offer up to 200 GB storage space and unlimited bandwidth, but the basic shared plan is pretty limited.

FAQs

Drupal is an open-source content management system, meaning it provides the framework in which to create a website. But it’s not a hosting provider, so you’ll need to use a separate hosting service (like the ones on this page) in order to store your website, and make it accessible to users.
Most of the hosts on this list offer one-click Drupal installation, so you can install it in no time, right from your account dashboard!
Drupal is a versatile CMS, and people use it to run a range of different websites. In other words, you can’t really go wrong with Drupal. That said, there are some other content management systems out there that are more specialized – for example, if you’re running an enterprise-level ecommerce store, then you’ll want to consider using Magento instead.
